Separations, Sorting and Cyclical Unemployment

چکیده

This paper establishes a new fact about the compositional changes in the pool of unemployed over the U.S. business cycle. Using micro-data from the Current Population Survey for the years 1962-2012, it documents that in recessions the pool of unemployed shifts towards workers with high wages in their previous job. These shifts are associated with both observed and unobserved factors in the wage and are mainly driven by the high cyclicality of separations of high-wage workers. The paper evaluates a number of theories that can potentially account for this new fact about the composition of the unemployed. ∗I am grateful to Per Krusell, John Hassler, Torsten Persson, Alan B. Cyclical Movements in Unemployment and Informality in Developing Countries This paper analyzes the cyclical properties of worker flows in Brazil and Mexico, two important developing countries with large unregulated or “informal” sectors. It generates three stylized facts that are critical to the accurate modeling of the sector and which suggest the need to rethink the approaches to date. First,...

Worker Reallocation over the Business Cycle: the Importance of Employer-to-employer Transitions

In this paper, I show that employer-to-employer transitions are not only pervasive in the U.S. labor market, making up 49% of all separations from employers over the past decade, but also are a critical component in understanding worker turnover over the business cycle. In fact, the shift in the composition of separations from employer-toemployer transitions to employment-to-unemployment transi...

Schumpeterian Restructuring

We develop a theory of cyclical unemployment, which relates the processes of job creation and job destruction over the business cycle, to the processes of restructuring, innovation and implementation arising from a model of endogenous cyclical growth. Due to a moral hazard problem, production workers are paid efficiency wages and experience involuntary unemployment. The model captures two key c...

Job Turnover, Unemployment and Labor Market Institutions

This paper studies the role of labor market institutions on unemployment and on the cyclical properties of job flows. We construct an intertemporal general equilibrium model with search unemployment and endogenous job turnover, and examine the consequences of introducing an unemployment benefit, a firing cost and a downward wage rigidity. The model is able to reproduce the main cyclical propert...
